Issue Date: October 15, 2004 Three new members named to NCR board The National Catholic Reporter Publishing Company added three members to its board of directors during a board meeting Sept. 21. They are Pamela D. Hayes, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and John Jake P. Mascotte.
Hayes, a criminal defense attorney in private practice in New York, is a member of the U.S. bishops National Review Board. The board is composed of a dozen prominent Catholics appointed by the bishops to seek the causes of the churchs sex abuse crisis and assist the dioceses in preventing abuse of minors. She is a former New Jersey public defender, has taught criminal law, and is a frequent television and radio legal commentator.
Townsend, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland, is an adjunct professor at Georgetown Universitys School of Public Policy. She has taught foreign policy at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Before being elected lieutenant governor, she served as deputy assistant attorney general of the United States. In the mid-1980s, she founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, named after her father. She serves on a number of boards, including the John F. Kennedy Library foundation and is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.
Mascotte retired in 2001 as president and chief executive officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. He is the former chairman and chief executive officer of the Continental Corporation, an insurance holding company. He is an attorney, a certified public accountant and a chartered life underwriter. He is currently chairman of the board of Workforce Investment Company Inc., a non-profit syndicator of welfare-to-work tax credits, and is the former national chairman of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the nations largest nonprofit developer of low-income housing. -- NCR staff National Catholic Reporter, October 15, 2004 |
